You basically want to register your site with every Directory and search engine you can. Do a google search for 'Submit url to directory' and you will immed see a bunch of sites you can your URL to.
Google and Yahoo are certainly the best and through those two, MSN will automatically pick up your site but you can submit to MSN anway. Add to searchsight com as well as thats for free and a good one.
