Can someone explain Social Bookmarking

I'm being told I need to do social bookmarking to build my search engine exposure! I'm not familiar with the concept and how it helps or hurts your site!

Yes - it's quite simple. It involves encouraging your site visitors to add your site to social network lists such as Digg, StumbleUpon etc.

Go and have a look at those sites and you will understand.

I'm skeptical as to the usefulness of visitors gained by this technique though.

Well, that is my concern? Can anyone comment on the pro and cons of this type of linking? It seems to be a popular thing that some of the services are recommending!

advantages:

a social bookmarking system can rank a resource based on how many times it has been bookmarked by users, which may be a more useful metric for end users than systems that rank resources based on the number of external links pointing to it

disadvantages:

social bookmarking is now being used as an SEO tool for ranking their sites that sometimes lead as a spam.
