Are there any SEO benefits of having a blog page as a homepage instead of a normal page? Instead of having the blog as a part of the site?

In some way this will help, as many blogs are considered to attract webcrawlers and get indexed fast. What is important is the quality of your content. And, if you have really great content it should be placed on pages and not buried in a blog.
