Do you sell things on a retail/mail order basis? are you familiar with the trading rules? In the uk we have distance selling regulations for selling things online. You should make yourself aware of any such regulations before even trying to sell things online.
Once your ok with that why not try out www.cubecart.com / www.magentocommerce.com or even www.oscommerce.com none of them are that easy to set up for a complete novice but they are very well put together and allow you to set up a fully working shop online.
You can opt for a middleman option where you add items to a website and then that website sells them for you, of course they take a cut and maybe even charge a fee like ebay.
Lastly pay someone to build you a site. this way you have some guarantee of the quality of the site. I work for www.lordbarron.com and we have built Commerce sites before, they take as much effort to build as they do to maintain so be aware if your looking to sell lots of things.
If your only looking to sell a couple of things try pay pal's 'buy it now' buttons. They are dead simple but not very flexible.
good luck
