How do I import my gmail messages into Thunderbird?

On my last computer, when I set up Thunderbird it automatically downloaded all my gmail messages.Now, on my new computer, I downloaded a newer version of Thunderbird but don't know how to import my mail from gmail into my Thunderbird.My idea was to do it indirectly by importing my gmail mail into Outlook, and then transfer it from Outlook into Thunderbird, but I can't figure out how to do that (or even if I can).Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
