How do you create a personalized news search?

I need to search for news stories on a variety of topics and easily identify new stories when they come up (either at a website or via an email notification).Some of these topics are obscure, so they won't always show up in Yahoo or Google news searches. I've been using search engines like addictomatic.com. Thanks for your suggestions!
