Watch for the following criteria as you evaluate affiliate programs...
- High quality product or service -- remember, it's your reputation that is on the line. Don't recommend products you wouldn’t buy. Be aware of programs that are just a way to legally bribe affiliates to recommend overpriced products in order to collect excessive commissions.
- Merchant has a good site that sells effectively.
- Ability for affiliates to link straight to individual products, rather than just to the home page. (If the visitor has to find the product that you recommend, your Conversion Rate plummets.)
- Great affiliate support is important. It indicates a high degree of commitment to the program and its affiliates.
- Pays good commission -- hard goods have lower margins than digital ones. So their commissions will be lower. Still, you should make at least 15% (hard good) or 25% (digital good) on any product that you recommend.
- Must be free (no charge) to join, no need to buy the product.
- Two-tier commission or more-- if the program pays a commission on affiliates who join because of you, this is also great.
- Lifetime cookie -- do you receive a commission if the person you referred returns and buys within one month? Three months? The cookie that tracks this should not expire or last at least 6 months.
You could find good affiliate programs on the Net but all that mean nothing if you don’t know what you are doing. If you do not educate yourself first and learn the marketing principles and techniques that rule e-commerce today you will meet failure and frustration.
