Take sure that the keywords and the description in your META tags correspond to the subject of your website.

I have been using Google adsense for some time and signed up for Adwords as well, see examples on my site: http://www.gworks.ws

To answer your quesiton I have found the Google tools on your account to be the best, get familiar with their optimization reports and make sure you name your compaigns clearly so you know what gets picked when yours Adwords get glicked through. Some is trial and error, but with clear names, split testing and running reports frequently you can get an idea of which one is working best. Good Luck!
