Can anyone give me a brief explanation of why both of these work? Is there anything that needs to be tweaked to ensure optimize seo?

Appreciated...

people usually know about a website with www in the beginning so its better to use it.. and use 301 permanent redirection, because backlinks can be different on both version..

I agree its generaly said to be good SEO practise to redirect from one to the other. THough it doesnt matter if you direct from url.com -> www(.)url(.)com or www(.)url(.)com <-url(.)com

As long as you direct from one to the other.

301 permanent redirect will help you to consolidate all of your link popularity to a one single URL. By doing this you can intimate the SEs that both URL are referring to a same website and you can get chance of keep your top ranking.
