PageRank is a sort of a voting system. A link for a page is vote for that entire webpage. First page are seem by Google as more important. Their votes are given meaning by Google.

I have read this all of the stuff and would like to say you that some engines simply count the number of links to a page, but as I have heard that Google has taken the idea a little more. Each inbound link is a page which itself has inbound links.
