Is it really important to have a social network presence?

People keep saying that you need to have a social network presence, and you have to be on places like Facebook and the like. My question is, is it really important to have a social network presence? If so, why? I think all it achieves is to show you that your old friends now have new friends and don't give a crap about you anymore. Is it important to be on the social networks?

Social networks are also a powerful marketing tool, it is not only for friends.
You can advertise and promote your products there!

Linkedin is also a place to get known by persons all over the world, your business presence, there are many good sites out there.

Off course it's very important for us.Social networks are also a potent marketing tool, it is not exclusive for friends.
