There are a number of key elements that makes for a successful ecommerce website. I suggest you check out the top ecommerce sites or your favorite ones, and look at how they do things -- from the layout and presentation on the homepage, how they process an order, product presentation including the Add to Cart buttons, and how they generate traffic
I strongly suggest you subscribe to Internet Retailer magazine http://www.internetretailer.com as it is the magazine for ecommerce retailers, including case studies, tips and other important lessons for your new site.
You will need to think of two things:
- get QUALIFIED traffic - you don't need just about any traffic (e.g. those 100,000 hits for $29.99 or TrafficSwarm.com types of traffic) because you need traffic that is interested in your products
- think of how to improve CONVERSION -- what will make people buy from your site and how do you turn the visitors to buyers? You need to focus on such important aspects as the size and color of Add to Cart, having a toll free number, clarity and quality of product images, ease of putting items in the cart and check out process, among other things
