What are the best practices for Google optimization?

I was wondering what would be the most important aspects of an effective Google optimization for a company web site, especially on-page SEO factors. I'd appreciate any help.

These two are very reliable resources but beware of everything you read on the web about SEO because 99% of it will be recycled rubbish or just scams. Some of it on Yahoo Answers I am sorry to say.

Write and develop a website with good original content.

Do not copy or re-hash content. There are alot of other factors involved. The major Search Engines are leaning towards content that is developed and written with the searcher in mind. Isn't that what we all want?

If you wana go for optimization of your site. Be sure your website is rich in content. The content should be original and informative to the viewer. Try to use atleast one h1 heading for the every keywords in the page. Dont forget meta tags. You have to specify keywords, title and description in meta tags. Last but important is the backlinks coz google rates your website as per your backlinks. Backlinks are the links of your website on other websites.
