Meta tags are a great way for webmasters to provide search engines with information about their sites. Meta tags can be used to provide information to all sorts of clients, and each system processes only the meta tags they understand and ignores the rest.

A special HTML tag that provides information on the web page. Unlike normal HTML tags, meta tags do not affect how the page is displayed. Instead, they provide information such as who created the page, refresh rate, what the page is about, and which keywords represent the page content. Many search engines use this information to build indexes.
