Why is Search Engine Traffic so important?

If I am not wrong, Search engine traffic is the term used for traffic that is directed to your site via the results of a search performed through Google, Yahoo, MSN or any other of the myriad search engines out there. But why is it so important? Moreover I felt it much costly both money and time wise.

Well that's quiet simple, without SE's as Google, Bing and Yahoo your website can not be found on the WWW due the billions of websites which are avaible. Most visitors visit a website after a query which that person has done. There aren't many websites who are generating direct traffic.
